✨SEARCHING FOR ART VOLUNTEERS FROM 2016 ✨ Please share 🎨

I know this is not the usual post, but it’s honestly the only option I have left as all my other avenues seem to have reached dead ends.

Back in Sept / Oct 2016, while recovering from a spinal cord injury in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dún Laoghaire, a group of volunteer art tutors/students came into the hospital each week to give art classes to patients.

At the time, they probably never realised the impact those evenings had on me.

Those sessions became a huge turning point in my recovery and eventually led to the art practice I have today.

Almost 10 years later, it’s all come a little full circle, as I’m now preparing to exhibit work in Croom Hospital as part of Croom Artists Circle .

I would genuinely love the opportunity to reconnect with the volunteers involved and simply say thank you 💕

✨SEARCHING FOR ART VOLUNTEERS FROM 2016 ✨ Please share 🎨

I know this is not the usual post, but it’s honestly the only option I have left as all my other avenues seem to have reached dead ends.

Back in Sept / Oct 2016, while recovering from a spinal cord injury in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dún Laoghaire, a group of volunteer art tutors/students came into the hospital each week to give art classes to patients.

We spent the day sorting through an old house…

Not just objects — but traces of a life.
The kind that quietly seeps into you.

An old pipe, a worn suitcase, rosary beads, holy statues —
layers of living, of habit, of belief.

But it was the smaller things that stayed with me.

Letters written …. Including about the - Potatoes not yet in.
Thanks for a piece of bacon sent to the UK.
Ordinary words, carrying the weight of a whole life.

Jam jars on a shelf — 53p, then 65p for a “new improved recipe.”
Time moving, almost unnoticed.

Under the table, two pairs of shoes…
left as if someone had just stepped out of them, meaning to return.

Fallen, a small bird’s nest… perfectly round, carefully made.
A quiet reminder that life carries on, in its own way.

It felt like standing in the middle of something that had passed —
and yet hadn’t fully left.

This is the space I’m always drawn to…
the in-between.
Where memory lingers.
Where ordinary things hold everything.

Limerick to Hambly & Hambly, Enniskillen was a long, long journey — but one so worth making.

We stopped in Knock along the way, as beautiful and peaceful as ever, before continuing on to the breathtaking Lough Erne — truly one of the most stunning parts of the world. Ireland really is a beautiful country, and when the sun shines, it’s simply wow. ☀️✨

What followed was a wonderful evening of wine, canapés, cocktails, and a beautiful meal in the company of fellow creatives. The piano room for the announcement was the perfect setting — elegant, intimate, and full of atmosphere for such a special moment.

I feel incredibly grateful for where art has brought me. To be selected as a finalist for the John Richardson French Residency Award 2026 in conjunction with Hambly & Hambly is something I’m deeply thankful for.

My painting Vivid will remain on exhibition for the next three months, and I’m delighted that this special piece continues its journey in such a beautiful setting. Enquiries are very welcome.

Art has always been part of me. 💫🎨 The first two pieces were painted by my grandmother (aka Mama Blackburne), who passed away when I was just four. The next two paintings in the reel are by my mum, Mairéad (O’Brien).

Having these pieces in our family feels very special — a beautiful thread of creativity running through generations. I love seeing the different styles, colours and approaches to painting.

Looking at them reminds me how art quietly lives on through family… and how lucky I am to continue that story through my own work.

With Mother’s Day coming up, it feels like a lovely moment to celebrate the creativity passed down through the women in my family. I’m so grateful to my mum for always encouraging my love of art. 💛
